Taking the family camping is a great experience, but from time to time you are sure to experience less than ideal weather. When you are preparing for a trip out into the wilderness it is always best to prepare for anything, especially rain, even if the forecast looks clear. Doing so can turn a dreary day into more fun than you had hoped for.
One thing that almost everyone brings camping is a hefty supply of marshmallows. Add in a bag of pretzel sticks and you have the key ingredients to make your own little village. Sticking the pretzel sticks into the marshmallows allows you to build for as long as your little one’s hearts desire. If you aren’t too squeamish you can even put them back in the bag when you are done for roasting later.
Card and board games are also a great way to bond and pass time during a rain storm. Just be sure that the games that you bring meet the ages of the kids that will be present. Going under the age is always better than going over. Soon you will wonder why you don’t play these games more at home.
Last, but not least, is story time. For the older kids the scariest of stories can be told, but when it comes to the little ones you definitely want to keep it mild. If you have a number of kids under 10 one fun story time is letting each one say three or four words to add onto the story from the person before them. The laughs that will be had will leave everyone forgetting it is even raining.
Making the most of a rainy day while camping can actually be the best part of the trip. You don’t need to bring too much that you wouldn’t otherwise and you get to spend time with everyone absolutely disconnected from distractions. As long as you make the most of it the kids will as well.
